Thanks to having a week off from work last week, I am nearly done with the hand quilting on my Bright Squares quilt. Just four more blocks, plus the binding (my least favorite) to go. I’m still pleased with my choice to rip out the machine quilting–just for the fact that the quilt lays flat when it’s spread out on the floor. It seemed crazy at first to do it, but I’m glad that I made the decision.

almost all quilted

And thinking about hand quilting, I wondered if I were to put together a hand quilting tutorial, would anyone be interested in it? It seems that many more people machine quilt (which yes, I would like a good tutorial, thank you very much) their projects, and maybe it’s just because they’re afraid to try hand quilting. Interested? Let me know. I’m thinking it might be fun!

23 Thoughts on “progress and a question

  1. I would LOVE to see a hand sewing tutorial!

  2. YES!
I’m a stab, pull up one and yank kind, I can never get a small enough stitch with the middle finger thing.
And I’m SUCH an improv quilter, that hand can be fun – just go all over the place!

  3. yes, please, I’d love a hand quilting tutorial! I’m going to start my first quilt soon, and a lot of the information I can find is about machine quilting, so not as useful to me.

  4. Yes please! I am semi-new to quilting and very intimidated by the idea of hand sewing that I break out into cold sweats at the very thought. 🙂

Oh yes! I would love to see a tutorial on hand quilting. I have tried it, but my stitches do not look perfect like yours does.

  6. I’d love to see a hand quilting tutorial! It’s something that I’ve been more than a little terrified to attempt.

  7. I would love a tutorial!!

  8. Yes, please, b/c while I have read about it in books, I am not so good at it yet, and could use any help I get before I tackle a bed-sized quilt of concentric squares (similiar to yours but *very* wonky).

  9. I’ve tried a couple of times and it just always looks like such a hack job, I’d love some tips on how to hand quilt…the right way…

  10. Me too! I’ve made a few quilts so far so still a newbie, but I hate machine quilting. I’ve got several large sections of my GFG (well over a year into this one so far)completed, so that will *have* to be hand quilted; I will need all the help I can get!

  11. Absolutely yes!

  12. yes for sure.. I cant always afford to send my quilts into the shop to be quilted. (and the wait list is like 5 weeks long)

Hey, yes, I’m interested in a hand quilting tutorial. Always thought I needed a quilting loom (or whatever it is called), but I see that you use what looks like a really large embroidery hoop. (??) That I can afford, LOL.

Just found your blog through SewMamaSew. Your work is beautiful. I would love a hand quilting tutorial. My grandmother just gave me a hand quilted dresden plate and I would love to do something similar. Thanks!

  16. 100% interested!!

  17. I need a tutorial! I have hand-quilted one quilt (10 years ago), and didn’t do the whole “pop-the-knot-through-the-batting” thing right, and now, most of the ends are coming out.
I’ve got a baby quilt almost finished that I want to hand-quilt, and would really love to start it with some better techniques (and renewed confidence!)
    Thanks!

Yes, I’m a hand quilter but could use a pic tutorial on how to end your thread. This is what I have the most problem with being I’m self taught.

  20. Oooh what a fun quilt! I am just finishing up a machine quilting tutorial which I will be putting up in a day or two…. It is VERY basic but if you are interested pop by.

I just found your blog via the Sew Mama Sew post and I would *love* a tutorial on hand quilting. I’m new to quilting and frustrated with what my machine quilting looks like and have been contemplating if quilting by hand might be more rewarding.

Oh yes, please do! There are so many tutorials on machine sewing a quilt but I haven’t really found one on hand quilting. Well, not one that helps me along. So I would extremely look forward to your’s!
